Understanding your symptoms

Bowel (colorectal) cancer often develops slowly from small growths called polyps. Screening colonoscopy can detect and remove these polyps before they become cancerous, and can identify cancer early when it is most treatable.

At Mount Edgecombe Scope Suite, screening is performed in a comfortable outpatient setting close to Durban, with sedation where appropriate and a clear specialist report afterwards.

How screening colonoscopy works

After a bowel preparation to clear the colon, a flexible camera examines the entire bowel lining. Any polyps found can usually be removed during the same procedure and sent for analysis, and biopsies can be taken where needed.

The procedure typically takes 20–40 minutes. You recover comfortably and receive your report, plus a recommended interval for any future screening.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Screening is commonly considered from around age 45–50, and earlier for those with a family history of bowel cancer or polyps, or with relevant symptoms. Your specialist will advise based on your risk.

Yes. Pre-cancerous polyps can often be removed during the same colonoscopy, which is one of the key benefits of screening.

Colonoscopy is usually well tolerated, with sedation provided where appropriate so most patients feel little or no discomfort.

Most medical aids require authorisation before a screening colonoscopy. Our team assists with the process; cover depends on your plan and benefits.
