Understanding your symptoms

A gastroscopy (upper GI endoscopy) lets a specialist examine your oesophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small bowel using a slim flexible camera. It is one of the most reliable ways to diagnose the cause of persistent upper digestive symptoms.

At Mount Edgecombe Scope Suite, gastroscopy is performed in a calm outpatient setting close to Durban, so most patients are seen and home the same day without unnecessary hospital admission.

What to expect from your gastroscopy

You will be welcomed, screened, and prepared for sedation where appropriate. A thin endoscope is passed gently through the mouth, and small biopsies or treatments may be taken if needed. The procedure usually takes 10–20 minutes.

Afterwards you recover in a calm area and receive a clear specialist report. If you have sedation, you must arrange transport home.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Gastroscopy is generally not painful. Most patients receive sedation to stay relaxed and comfortable, with only mild throat discomfort afterwards.

The procedure itself usually takes about 10–20 minutes. Allow extra time for check-in, sedation, and recovery before you head home.

Most patients choose sedation for comfort, with anaesthetic support where appropriate. Your plan depends on your clinical assessment.

Most medical aids require authorisation before a gastroscopy. Our team assists with the process, though final cover depends on your plan.
