Reflux & Heartburn Gastroscopy
Specialist assessment of persistent reflux and heartburn for patients across Mount Edgecombe, Phoenix, Umhlanga, Durban North, Tongaat, Ballito, and the KZN North Coast.
Understanding your symptoms
Occasional heartburn is common, but persistent reflux that does not settle with medication should be assessed. Long-standing acid reflux can inflame the oesophagus and, in some cases, lead to changes that benefit from monitoring.
A gastroscopy lets a specialist look directly at the oesophagus and stomach to identify the cause of your symptoms and guide the right treatment. It is performed in a calm outpatient suite close to Durban.
How gastroscopy helps with reflux
During gastroscopy, a slim flexible camera examines the lining of the oesophagus and stomach. The specialist can identify inflammation, ulcers, hiatus hernia, or changes such as Barrett's oesophagus, and take biopsies where needed.
The procedure usually takes 10–20 minutes with sedation where appropriate, and you receive a clear report with a tailored treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions
Gastroscopy is often considered when reflux persists despite medication, or when it is associated with swallowing difficulty, weight loss, anaemia, or vomiting blood.
Gastroscopy is generally not painful. Sedation keeps most patients relaxed and comfortable, with only mild throat discomfort afterwards.
Long-standing reflux can cause inflammation and, in some cases, changes such as Barrett's oesophagus. Gastroscopy helps assess and monitor this.
Most medical aids require authorisation before a gastroscopy. Our team assists with the process; cover depends on your plan.
